Teen Trail Crew Leader

Job Dates: May 21, 2018 through August 17, 2018
Hiring Timeline: Accepting applications until positions are filled.

Summary Description: Crew Leaders are three-month, seasonal staff positions within the AMC’s Trails Department. Crew Leaders lead Teen Volunteer Trail Crews for teens, ages 14 through 19, on one to four week front country and backcountry trail crews. All Teen Trail Crews are co-led by two Crew Leaders.

When in the field, all Crew Leaders are expected to act as mentors and facilitate proper outdoor skills associated with low impact methods. Teen Trail Crews are involved in a variety of projects, maintaining hiking and multi-use trails. Crew Leaders work together to teach volunteers trail maintenance skills, such as installing and cleaning water bars, setting rock steps, building bog bridges, blazing and standardizing trails, all while emphasizing safety and maintaining a high level of morale and work standards.

The Crew Leader position is an excellent development and learning opportunity for individuals who are interested in a conservation, outdoor and trail work experience. While prior trail work experience is preferred, it is not required as these Crew Leader positions will receive substantial mentorship and training in trail work and leadership.

The Crew Leader position is ideal for independent and motivated individuals seeking to learn and grow as leaders and trail workers. Our priority is supporting the energetic teens that come through the program and leading them through an experience that is challenging, fun and positive.

Hours are variable within the 40-50 hour workweek. All Crew Leaders are responsible for volunteer supervision in the field at all times. Work can be physically and mentally challenging but the rewards are often unforgettable.

The Crew Leaders will split their summer between AMC’s Mohican Outdoor Center in Blairstown, NJ (in Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area) and AMC’s Harriman Outdoor Center in Harriman State Park, NY (on Breakneck Pond).
