Program Director

Organizational Summary:

Farm & Wilderness Foundation (F&W) is a non-profit, educational organization operating eight summer camp programs for children and young adults, a family camp, and part time retreat rentals.  Set on a beautiful 4,200-acre campus in the Green Mountains of Vermont, F&W programs are rich in adventure, community, history, and spirit and foster an individual relationship with the natural world.  While each camp and initiative provides unique programs based on age and interests, all F&W activities are shaped by Quaker principles and the common belief that individuals and communities are strengthened by justice, honesty, self-reliance, diversity and respect for all persons.  People of any race, background, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or economic status are encouraged to apply to our camps as campers or staff.

Position Summary:

The Program Director is responsible for managing all the camp programs, including hiring, training, and managing their supervisees.  Additionally, the Program Director is responsible for managing to budget targets, proactive risk management measures, and ensuring that operations meet multiple regulatory requirements.  Finally, the Program Director is responsible for: 1) communicating program mission and needs to multiple audiences within and outside F&W; 2) actively participating in and supporting F&W’s anti-racism/Inclusivity & Equity efforts; and, 3) supporting key decision-making of the Management and Program Teams.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate camp directors and other supervisees

  • Evaluate programming in relation to F&W’s mission, core values and goals (observing, giving feedback) as well as external regulatory agencies such as American Camp Association (ACA), AEE, USDA, OSHA, Health Dept., Nursing Board, USFS, Vermont State Forests
  • Manage and facilitate budgeting and fiscal responsibility related to program/camp operations
  • Play a key role in transforming F&W into an anti-racist organization

  • Submit a Program Director’s Annual Report; Edit Camp Directors’ Annual Reports; contribute to Quarterly Reports for the Board

  • Facilitate Program Team meetings, including planning, preparation, and project management

  • Take an active part in F&W policy-making, primarily by attending Board Meetings and actively sitting on Board Committees

  • Participate in F&W recruitment and marketing activities for all camps, including participation in two work weekends                                             


Qualifications: Required

  • Commitment to youth development and progressive social change
  • Training, education, and/or work, life experience addressing issues of race, class, and gender within the U.S. culture
  • Experienced educator or background in an experiential outdoors or classroom setting
  • Demonstrated ability to manage staff of a wide age and experience range
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work tasks, manage multiple projects; meet deadlines
  • Excellent computer and organizational skills
  • Ability to troubleshoot in both outdoor education and office settings
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills

Experience Desired

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in relevant field
  • F&W or similar camp work experience
  • Experience managing youth programs in an outdoor setting
  • Experience with more than one of the following: outdoor/adventure education, residential camping, environmental education, farm-based education, experiential education
  • Demonstrated administrative and leadership ability
  • History of directing one of the above kinds of program
  • Knowledge of safety and risk management in outdoor programming
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise staff
  • The ability to communicate well with F&W staff, campers, community members
  • Concurrence with Quaker beliefs and the F&W mission and values
