Brief Position Summary:
The MiddView / Middlebury Outdoor Programs (MOP) Associate is an essential member of the Student Activities staff, playing an integral role in the administration of the College's orientation trips and outdoor education programs, as well as advising and managing a selection of student organizations. S/he supports the work of the Director of Outdoor Programs and Club Sports and the Assistant Director of Orientation through assisting in the design and delivery of the orientation trips program, focusing on logistical planning, technical skills development, service learning, and leadership training, and risk management training to ~200 student trip leaders annually, depending on specific skills, experience, and programmatic needs. S/he also serves as a field instructor for MOP courses and expeditions and assists in the training of Mountain Club trip leaders. Critically, s/he also serves as a key member of the risk management and incident response team for all orientation, MOP and Middlebury Mountain Club (MMC) trips.

Essential Functions:
Offer is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check.

• Assists the Director of Outdoor Programs and Club Sports in the design and delivery of the Middview trips program, with particular emphasis on leader training and logistical support.
• Assumes primary responsibility for the planning and delivery of approximately 30 orientation trips – Community Engagement, Wilderness Exploration and Vermont Exploration.
• Plays an integral role in the risk management and incident response systems for MiddView trips, MOP courses and programs, the Middlebury Mountain Club and the February Outdoor Orientation (FOO) program.
• Assumes significant responsibility in the training of student trip leaders in a variety of other contexts, including the Middlebury Mountain Club and the FOO program, through both classroom and field instruction.
• Maintains records of programs, trips, accidents and incidents
• Assists in the selection, hiring, training and mentoring of student employees including the Trips Interns and Trip Leaders (for both MiddView and FOO) and the Gear Room managers.
• Manages one or more clusters of student organizations
• Assists in the supervision of student employees including Orientation Trips Program Coordinators and Gear Room Managers

General Responsibilities:
• Serves as a key trainer, mentor, role model, and risk manager within the College’s various trips programs.
• Participates fully as a member of the Student Activities and Dean of Students Office staff
• Assists in the design and delivery of the College’s two annual orientation trips programs
• Advises and mentors student organization leaders
• Performs other related duties as required.

Education:
Bachelor’s degree and certification as Wilderness Responder or higher required. Instructor certification with the ACA, AMGA, or similar organization highly desirable.

Knowledge:
Knowledgeable in the theory and practice of:

• Student development
• Outdoor and experiential education
• Leadership development
• Risk management
• Group facilitation and training
• A commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Intermediate computer skills required.

Experience:
Significant outdoor leadership, program management, and personal outdoor experience required. Experience training and facilitating groups in outdoor and experiential settings crucial. Experience in community engagement, service learning and social justice in a higher education setting highly desirable. Student mentoring and advising experience highly desirable.
