Outdoor Educator / Site Coordinator

POSITION: Outdoor Education Instructor & Site Coordinator

Organization: Sagehen Outdoor Education Program, Truckee, CA

The Sagehen Outdoor Education Program is hiring an Outdoor Education Instructor and a Site Coordinator. We are a residential outdoor education program near Truckee, California. The Sagehen Outdoor Education Program is an established, unique environmental education program for fifth grade students in the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District. It is housed at the UC Berkeley Research Station just outside of Truckee.  Classes of fifth grade students come throughout the month for a 2 day/1night or 3 day/2 night program. The staff works Monday through Friday, plus 3-4 flexible planning days before the sessions.   Students will learn a variety of skills and gain knowledge about local ecosystems, flora and fauna of the Sierra Nevada, macro-invertebrates, water quality and issues, topographical mapping, plant and animal identification, insects, and other environmental education topics. Classes will be taught by outdoor educators, the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS), and SWEP (the local watershed education non-profit).

The mission of the Sagehen Outdoor Education Program is to provide 5th grade students of the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District with a high quality, standards-based, hands-on environmental education experience about the area in which they live.

The program begins around September 13, 2017 and ends around October 13, 2017. During the weekdays, the outdoor education instructor is with a group of approximately 15 students from 7:30 AM-9:00 PM daily. The outdoor educators are expected to stay on site overnight. Their role during each day is to keep the students organized, engaged, and excited about learning.  The outdoor educators create a sense of team-building, enthusiasm, fun, and respect for nature. They are responsible for planning and leading the following activities during the day:  team-building (heavy emphasis on team-building activities), free time, afternoon hike, environmental science classes, twilight activities, and campfire activities.  As well, they are responsible for attending the other activities with their group of students and assisting the other instructors (SWEP and TINS).

The Site Coordinator is responsible for facilitating all of the meals, maintaining food inventory, and coordinating adults and students during meals. As well, the Site Coordinator is the “On-Site Coordinator” during the program.  This includes but is not limited to welcoming the classes of 5th grade students, overseeing the outdoor educators, assisting and organizing the evening programs, maintaining and enforcing behavioral expectations, and ensuring that the program, overall, is running smoothly.

The following qualifications are essential when applying for the Outdoor Educator position: experience working with children in the outdoors, experience leading team-building activities, personal experience leading groups in the outdoors, experience teaching children in a traditional or non-traditional setting, an easy-going and flexible attitude and a love of nature. An outdoor science or education background is preferred.

The dates of employment are approximately September 13, 2017 – October 13, 2017 (not including weekends), and including 3-4 “flex days” for staff training and program debriefing, dates TBD.
