Program Operations and Logistics Manager


June 11 – September 1, 2018 (potential to couple with spring and fall opportunities on Thompson Island)

The Logistics Coordinator (LC) is responsible for providing food, materials, and equipment essential to Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center (TIOBEC) programs and staff. Additionally, the Logistics Department assists with the maintenance and upkeep of island-wide safety and operational systems, campsites, and facilities. The primary duties will include maintaining the department’s food, supplies and equipment, readying supplies and equipment for a wide variety of programs and island departments, and maintaining efficient issue/de-issue and repair systems. The ideal candidate possesses a passion for organization and efficient work habits, knowledge of contemporary outdoor gear and clothing, and attentiveness to details. The LC works within the Programs Department, and the island as a whole, to ensure that all support functions related to TIOBEC’s programming and operations takes place.  These functions include, but are not limited to, managing an equipment inventory system, maintaining the organization’s first aid kits and medical equipment, providing staff housing with basic food and supplies, and expedition equipment maintenance and repair. The LC, while working closely with numerous departments, reports directly to the Program Operations and Logistics Manager.



  • Maintain the organization and cleanliness of the Logistics facilities

  • Maintain all island and waterfront first aid kits and medical equipment

  • Provide food and equipment for all Expedition programs

  • Provide snacks and appropriate gear for all Discovery and Connections programs

  • Distribution of food and supplies as part of the staff’s room and board

  • Repair kayaks, stoves, sleeping systems, clothing, and all other equipment pertaining to the functions of the Programs department

  • Work closely with equipment and food vendors, ensuring high quality and low cost

  • Assist with purchasing and budget management

  • Assist the Challenge Course Manager with the cleaning and maintenance of TIOBEC’s climbing elements and gear

·         Perform additional duties and responsibilities at the direction of the Program Operations and Logistics Manager



  • Bachelor’s degree preferred

  • 1-2 years relevant field experience

  • 1-2 years relevant logistics experience

  • Competent in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and Outlook

  • Experience with equipment repair and maintenance

·         Wilderness First Responder & CPR certification preferred

·         100 verifiable field credits with TIOBEC, OB or similar organization

·         Thompson Island Challenge Course Site Manager Certification preferred

  • Proficiency in backpacking and/or sea kayaking preferred

  • Experience working with diverse communities

  • Experience with food preparation and food service management a plus

  • Experience with sea kayak repair a plus

  • Experience with sewing a plus

  • High level of interpersonal and social competence

  • Knowledge of outdoor industry equipment and clothing trends

  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Valid Driver’s license and meet OB driving standards



·         Expected ongoing coordination and collaboration with all Program Instructors, Managers and Course Directors, as well as other island departments

·         Environmental fluctuations are typical of the New England coast, and can including hot, humid weather, and unseasonably cool, rainy, and windy coastal weather; must be comfortable working outside in either of these extremes for extended periods of time

·         This position requires a criminal background check



·         Must be 21 years of age or older

·         Positions reporting hours to the island, are asked to assist loading/unloading cargo from the boat as able.  This involves lifting and walking with parcels upwards of 50lbs on and off moving docks and up/down ramps

  • Must be able to be on feet an average of 5+ hours per day
