The Coordinator actively supervises and mentors student employees and volunteers to create safe, inclusive, and accessible recreational environments for the University community. The primary purpose of the position is to develop, direct, and foster an experiential learning environment and to oversee and administer the Expedition program through direct interaction with students to enhance their academic and learning experiences outside of the classroom setting. The position manages all Expeditions’ student employees, creates leadership development opportunities, maintains and updates records, policies, procedures, and provides facility and event management support to Campus Recreation. The position also supports Climbing Programs through assisting with the administration of climbing programs, student trainings, climbing walls management, and collaborative events. The position reports to the Assistant Director of Climbing Programs for Campus Recreation.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement accessible and inclusive Expeditions programs and workshops to meet the needs and interests of the entire UNC student body.
  • Investigate new and potential off-site locations for future Expeditions and Carolina Compass programs within North Carolina, surrounding states and regions, and internationally.

  • Actively teach, train, and develop outdoor recreation leaders through the Outdoor Leadership Series.
  • Ensure all programs operate within required departmental and University risk management guidelines.  Support the Assistant Director of Climbing Programs with the development of risk management guidelines and practices for new expedition course areas, travel, special events, and programs.
