The Expeditions Coordinator provides leadership and advisement to a diverse and comprehensive Carolina Adventures trips program that offers approximately 30 programs serving more than 300 participants annually. The Coordinator actively supervises and mentors student employees and volunteers to create safe, inclusive, and accessible recreational environments for the University community. The primary purpose of the position is to develop, direct, and foster an experiential learning environment and to oversee and administer the Expedition program through direct interaction with students to enhance their academic and learning experiences outside of the classroom setting. The position manages all Expeditions’ student employees, creates leadership development opportunities, maintains and updates records, policies, procedures, and provides facility and event management support to Campus Recreation. The position also supports Climbing Programs through assisting with the administration of climbing programs, student trainings, climbing walls management, and collaborative events. The position reports to the Assistant Director of Climbing Programs for Campus Recreation.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Develop and implement accessible and inclusive Expeditions programs and workshops to meet the needs and interests of the entire UNC student body.
- Investigate new and potential off-site locations for future Expeditions and Carolina Compass programs within North Carolina, surrounding states and regions, and internationally.
- Manage Carolina Compass backpacking, climbing, and kayaking expeditions that assist incoming students with a positive personal and social transition into the University experience.
- Provide outreach to student groups, campus organizations, faculty, staff, and the UNC Community to recruit participants and develop new Carolina Adventures and Expeditions programming.
- Actively teach, train, and develop outdoor recreation leaders through the Outdoor Leadership Series.
- Ensure all programs operate within required departmental and University risk management guidelines. Support the Assistant Director of Climbing Programs with the development of risk management guidelines and practices for new expedition course areas, travel, special events, and programs.

- Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Outdoor Education, Physical Education, Sports Management, or related field. All degrees must be received from an appropriately accredited institution.
- One year of professional experience working in an outdoor recreation or related setting (two years of Graduate Assistant experience is commensurate).
- Experience training, developing, and supervising trip leaders and employees.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with a goal-oriented team.
- Wilderness First Responder certification required or willingness to obtain post-hiring.
- Master’s degree in Recreation, Outdoor Education, Physical Education, Sports Management, or related field. All degrees must be received from an appropriately accredited institution.
- Two years of experience in a higher educational or collegiate setting and directly supervising student workers and employees.
- Outdoor recreation program management experience in a higher educational setting.
- Experience with challenge course instruction and facilitation.
- Experience in an indoor climbing facility.
- Demonstrated experience successfully leading several of the following outdoor recreation activities: rock climbing, backpacking/hiking, sea kayaking, flat-water kayaking, mountain biking, and/or stand up paddleboarding.
