Role: Wilderness Instructor
Eagle Rock School: is a co-ed, residential, tuition free, private, non-profit, full academic curriculum high school in Estes Park, CO designed to work with students who chose to enroll and who are disengaged from school. The school is accredited by the Association for Experiential Education. All new students go on a 24-day wilderness course as the orientation to the school. www.eaglerockschool.org
Contract duration: January 17- February 23, 2019 and/or May 16th- June 22nd, 2019
Responsibilities: Function as part of an instructor team for a 24-day wilderness backpacking course for students new to the high school. The course is required for all students as part of their orientation trimester. Program model is based upon the Outward Bound Process with unique modifications to fit Eagle Rock. The course focuses HEAVILY on personal growth and development. Activities include backpacking, non-technical peak ascents, solo, trail service work, and 5-mile final run. Instructors are expected to support students throughout the course, provide feedback, model skills taught, and provide formative and summative assessments. WINTER: Course dates, including a one-week orientation and 3 day course wrap-up are January 17- February 23, 2019. Field days are Jan 28 – Feb 20. The course takes place in the Superstition Wilderness Area in Arizona. SUMMER: Course dates, including a one-week orientation and 3 day course wrap-up are May 16th- June 22nd, 2019, filed days are May 27th-June 19th, 2019. This course takes place in the Lost Creek Wilderness Area in Colorado.
Qualifications: Extended wilderness trip (21+ day courses) leadership experience. Current WFR & CPR. Familiar with desert/Rocky Mountain terrain. Strong facilitation skills. Ability to work long hours in difficult and stressful conditions. Excellent physical condition. Clean driving record and experience driving multi passenger vehicles (15 passenger vans and/or mini busses). Experience with NOLS/Outward Bound/WEA or other similar organization helpful. Experience working with diverse populations including a mix of LGBTQ students; students from low and middle income backgrounds; students from suburban, urban, and rural settings; and students from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds; students who have not found success in traditional educational settings. Age ranges from 15-18. Experience as a lead instructor desirable.
Salary/Benefits: General starting salary depends on experience. Workers Comp insurance while on contract. Room and board during orientation week, and course wrap-up week. Potential for work on future Eagle Rock courses.
