Director of Outdoor Leadership and Education

Lycoming College seeks a Director of Outdoor Leadership and Education (OLE).  Entering into its fourth year, the OLE program at Lycoming is poised to continue providing exceptional curricular and co-curricular programming.  The program is to be housed in a newly constructed gateway building which will feature a three story climbing wall and a bouldering wall. The building will also house the College’s Center for Enhanced Academic Experiences, Admissions, and Alumni offices.

The Director of Outdoor Leadership and Education (OLE) facilitates the co-curricular education and leadership development of students through direction of the college’s outdoor leadership and education program (OLE). The Director works independently and in collaboration as the primary coordinator of a vigorous program of outdoor education and leadership programming for students. Equally, the Director serves as a resource for and collaborator with faculty and staff using outdoor pursuits to accomplish their goals and objectives.


QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Education

  • Master’s Degree in outdoor education, recreation, or related field; 5 years of program management experience with progressively increasing levels of responsibility
  • Current WFR or WEMT certification

  • Professional instructor certification in at least one of the following areas: Wilderness medicine, AMGA SPI/CWI, ACA SWR, ACA Canoeing/Kayaking

Knowledge, Skills and Experience


  • Significant wilderness leadership experience in all seasons
  • Significant program design, management and administration experience

  • Curriculum design experience

  • Group facilitation skills

  • Risk management experience at both the field and programmatic levels

  • A high level of technical and instructional proficiency in a number of outdoor pursuits including some or all of the following: Rock and ice climbing, mountaineering, expedition canoeing, backcountry skiing, and whitewater kayaking, preferably at the instructor trainer level

  • Demonstrated experience in risk management review

  • Knowledge of student development theory and outdoor education/leadership and recreation within a liberal arts context

  • Active member of one or more of the following: AEE, AORE, ACA

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and good driving record


Working environment involves duties that require travel.  Candidate must be able and willing to work evening and weekend hours.  Duties require an annual average of 1/3 of work time allocated to field instruction, 2/3 of work time allocated to program administration and development; exposure to various weather conditions; work with chemicals or substances requiring safety precautions or work with equipment or weather conditions requiring constant attention. Candidate must be able to carry a 40 lb. pack 10 miles over mountainous terrain in adverse weather conditions.
