Director of Mountaineering

Summary 

Participating in and supervises the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and administration of the Asheville School's mountaineering program. Oversees the hiring, training, testing, and certification of staff of the program. Develops and implements various mountaineering programs such as climbing, fly fishing, caving, ice climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, back packing,  and challenge courses.  This includes but is not limited to overseeing all logistics and planning, scheduling or trips and meetings, monitoring our permits and accreditation requirements, management of our gear and physical plant in addition to overseeing our risk management plan.  Ensures that all appropriate health and safety standards are maintained. This position reports to the School’s Assistant Head of School for Student Life. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

1.     Oversees and coordinates the recruitment, training, scheduling, certification, and performance of employees of the program; supervises the day-to-day activities of staff and maintenance employees. 

2.     Oversees and coordinates the administration of the facilities, to include scheduling of facility operations and contract management.  

3.     Overseeing all logistics and planning, scheduling or trips and meetings, monitoring our permits and accreditation requirements. 

4.     Performs regular safety inspections of equipment and facilities to reduce hazards and to provide maximum safety to the students and employees who use the equipment.  

5.     Overseeing our risk management plan for the mountaineering program. 

6.     Develops, implements, and oversees a variety of mountaineering programs for students, faculty, staff, and/or members of the general public. School activities are top priority. 

7.     Hires, trains and schedules qualified instructors and all other program staff. 

8.     Surveys students and employees and evaluates programs to determine public needs and how to increase program efficiency and effectiveness. 

9.     Participates in the development of annual operating budgets, meets budget commitments and provides fiscal direction to the unit. 

10.  Develops and maintains records of operational facility usage and safety records. 

11.  Represents the organization at various community and/or business meetings, committees, and task forces; promotes existing and new programs and/or policies. 

12.  Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. 

Responsible for the planning, logistics, staffing, and implementation of the new student orientation, camping trips. 

Minimum Job Requirements 

·      Applicants should demonstrate teaching experience related to the subject matter. 

·      Applicants should be able to demonstrate mastery in several of the mountaineering programming areas including:  rock and ice climbing, whitewater kayaking, mountain biking, fly fishing, caving, and backpacking. 

·      Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. 

·      Applicants should show evidence of having the equivalent of at least five years' full-time experience (or the equivalent in part-time employment) working in outdoor recreation and education or a closely related field within the last ten years. (A candidate with less industry experience may be considered if the applicant can show evidence of extensive teaching, student advising, and course development in the area of recreation management). A strong academic background in at least one area of outdoor recreation/education is required. Applicants should show evidence of extensive experience in venue selection and developing programming that is appropriate for the participants skill levels. 

·       Master's Degree is preferred with experience in outdoor recreation programming, adventure education or related field.   

·      Documented success in teaching adventure recreation academic coursework. 

·      Wilderness First Responder certification required.  

·      Minimum of AMGA SPI climbing certification or ACA Level IV white water kayak instructor certification or ability to obtain upon hiring.  

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required 

·      Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control. 

·      Extensive knowledge in several Mountaineering Programming areas including, but not limited to: rock and ice climbing, whitewater kayaking, mountain biking, fly fishing, caving, and backpacking. 

·      Knowledge and implementation of Leave no Trace practices. 

·      Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports. 

·      Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments. 

·      Knowledge of contract documents and specifications. 

·      Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications including the MS office suite of tools. 

·      Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments. 

·      Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. 

·      Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. 

·      Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures. 

·      Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures. 

·      Knowledge of certification standards in area of specialty. 

·      Knowledge of budget preparation, cost estimating, monitoring, and fiscal management principles and procedures.
