Colorado Rocky Mountain School: Teaching Fellow Position

COLORADO ROCKY MOUNTAIN SCHOOL TEACHING FELLOW PROGRAM
www.crms.org

The Colorado Rocky Mountain School (CRMS) is a college-preparatory independent high school located thirty miles northwest of Aspen in the mountains of western Colorado. CRMS’s average enrollment is 175 students in grades 9-12 from various countries. Key to the underpinnings of our progressive and experiential program are close faculty-student relationships and a skill-based academic curriculum balanced with outdoor activities that challenge young people to develop skills, judgment, responsibility, as well as a service ethic. Also significant are tasks related to the daily life and well being of the community. Our balanced curriculum of rigorous college-preparatory courses, wilderness education, and service learning, all in a residential setting, allows students to cultivate academic excellence, critical thinking and community mindedness.

The CRMS Teaching Fellow Program offers the opportunity to become fully immersed in the three integral parts of our program: Active, Academic and Residential.

ACTIVE: Involvement in our five day a week Active program including: The Sports program (kayaking, climbing, mountain biking, numerous types of skiing and snowboarding activities, etc.); The Service program (ceramics, blacksmithing, bike shop, etc.); Outdoor trips, including Wilderness Orientation (10 days), Fall Trip (5 days) and Spring Trip (7 days). Interim, a week-long immersive course of study

RESIDENTIAL: Living and working in a residential dormitory, with ongoing training in residential education. Fellows also serve on a weekend duty team nine weekends per year, facilitate a weekly restriction work crew and participate in evening dorm duties averaging two to three nights a week. Teaching Fellows also assist with several Weekend Rendezvous, which provide overnight weekend adventures for our residential students.

ACADEMIC: Mentorship with a CRMS faculty member in a specific subject area (History, Math, Literature, Modern Languages, Science, Art, Technology, College Counseling), as well as participation in our week long Interim program. Teaching fellows will also be called upon to be substitute teachers and to cover study halls when necessary.

The Teaching Fellow Program is a one-year appointment. Employment begins early August, 2018, and extends through early June, 2019. While at CRMS, teaching fellows will receive room and board, a season ski pass to the four areas of Aspen, a $10,000 stipend and health benefits.

WHO SHOULD APPLY: Individuals with a college degree who are interested in education, working with teenagers and gaining firsthand experience in an independent board school setting. Expertise in kayaking, mountain biking and/or rock climbing a must with an ability to demonstrate a strong personal practice in their sport(s) of choice. Institutional outdoor instruction highly preferred and individuals who offer diverse perspectives welcome.

If interested, please send a cover letter, resume and CRMS Application to: Jessica McGrath, Colorado Rocky Mountain School, 500 Holden Way, Carbondale, Colorado 81623 or electronically to: jmcgrath@crms.org.
