North Carolina Outward Bound School offers an Apprenticeship Program for experienced individuals interested in becoming Assistant Instructors and Lead Instructors with our At Risk programs. The program is designed to provide an understanding of Outward Bound philosophies and operations, as well as an opportunity to work hands-on with students on wilderness expeditions. Instructor apprentices should be individuals who plan to make a commitment to working as an instructor across multiple seasons.
Length of FL At Risk Programs Apprenticeship
The 2017 Fall Apprenticeship Program will begin in late August. Our Florida At Risk Apprenticeship Program runs three times a year. The Program begins with a 12-day wilderness expedition to learn topics like technical skills, safety and risk management, self-care, student management, and behavioral theory. Additional training and skills development days will occur intermittently to support individual development. Instructor Apprentices will instruct on one or two courses as a third instructor while working to demonstrate the skills necessary to be in the Assistant Instructor (AI) position. A third course as an Instructor Apprentice prior to work as an AI can be arranged on a case-by-case basis. The time this takes is dependent on scheduling, prior experience, and drive to demonstrate growth, but most Apprentices can attain the AI position in three or four months. The Staffing Coordinator and trainers will be intentional in placing Apprentices on courses that will offer the most challenge and potential for advancement based on the skills the individual brings to the position. Apprentices will earn a stipend of approximately $500 per month up to the start of their first course as an AI.
The Next Step
NCOBS Florida At Risk programs run year-round. After moving to the position of Assistant Instructor, individuals may apply for full-time work. Full-time work requires a commitment of 18 months and is compensated with additional benefits like salary pay, priority in scheduling, a per-course bonus, and a housing stipend. Instructors generally work in the AI position for one to three consecutive seasons before being considered for promotion to Lead Instructor.
- Minimum 21 years old
- Experience working with youth – preference given to applicants with experience working with at-risk populations
- Current first aid and CPR certifications – preference given to applicants with Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification (individuals MUST be certified WFRs before working as Assistant Instructors)
- Valid driver's license
- Experience in the outdoors – preference given to applicants with experience guiding others
- Ability to participate in moderate to vigorous physical activity, including but not limited to running, swimming, and canoeing
- Ability to lift and move a minimum of 50 pounds
Compensation and Benefits
