The Assistant Professor for Outdoor Adventure Leadership is a full-time tenure-track position within the department of Health and Human Performance in the College of Allied Health Professionals at Montana State University Billings.


Montana State University Billings is a comprehensive public four-year higher education institution located in Montana's largest population center, whose faculty is actively engaged in teaching, research, creative endeavors and public service.  MSU Billings is unique in that it is one of a select few higher education institutions that also boasts an embedded two-year community college.

The University opened in 1927 and was initially called Eastern Montana State Normal School at Billings and was established to prepare teachers for elementary schools in eastern Montana.  MSU Billings has grown, with the city of Billings and Yellowstone County, into the major urban comprehensive higher education center of south central and eastern Montana.  The University campus consists of four colleges:  the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Education and the College of Allied Health Professions.  Seven miles west of the University campus sits City College at MSU Billings, which serves the comprehensive two-year mission of the university.


DESCRIPTION:  The Assistant Professor for Outdoor Adventure Leadership will be responsible for teaching undergraduate courses in the Outdoor Adventure Leadership degree program. This faculty member is also expected to develop, maintain, and evaluate ongoing relationships as well as new relationships among the campus degree program and the numerous professionals and businesses upon which the program depends for skill-specific experiences. This faculty member is also expected to recruit, advise and supervise students; provide service to the department, college, university and community; and support and engage in the university’s commitment to outcomes assessment.


Required Qualifications:

  •  A Master’s degree in a field related to Outdoor Adventure Leadership degree program
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level in addition to non-school, informal educational settings
  • Evidence of effective supervision of student experiential learning and professional development
  • Success in the logistics involved in outdoor/adventure learning i.e. equipment purchase and maintenance, contracts with providers, etc.
  • Evidence of building and maintaining effective collegial relationships and partnerships with off-campus constituencies involved in outdoor/adventure education

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree related to Outdoor Adventure Leadership
  • Professional certification(s) specific to Outdoor Adventure Education and Leadership
  • Record of scholarly activity
  • Knowledge of outdoor adventure leadership skills specific to inter-mountain region
  • Success integrating outdoor adventure degree program with related degree programs in exercise science, education, and related fields of study
  • Success in providing experiential learning for adult learners
  • Success in grant writing relative to program support
