Santa Barbara Middle School (SBMS) is currently seeking candidates for the position of Assistant Head of School. S/he will work in close partnership with the Head of School to advance the school’s mission and to achieve educational and operational goals.
Founded in 1976, SBMS is a co-educational school that offers students in grades 6-9 a profound educational experience combining Academics, Creative Arts & Sports, Outdoor Education, and Community Involvement. Serving approximately 165 students, our educational environment facilitates academic achievement, while also bolstering all aspects of a child’s well being. We challenge students to develop life skills in all areas, with the stability of a safe and nurturing community. Leadership, self-advocacy, creative problem solving, compassion for others, and global awareness are just a few of the traits that distinguish our graduates. The Assistant Head plays a major role in the life of the school and is expected to be deeply involved in the day-to-day work of faculty and students. Therefore, extensive experience in Experiential Education and understanding of the school’s mission and philosophy is a requirement for this position. Candidates with advanced degrees and a strong background in administration, teaching, advising, and coaching will be preferred. Personal characteristics necessary for the position include: a high energy and enthusiasm for all aspects of school life; organization and initiative; warmth of personality and a good sense of humor; collaborative mindset and consensus-building skills; patience and persistence; and excellent communication skills.
Reporting to the Head of School, the Assistant Head of School will:
CURRICULUM & PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
Work with the Head of School and the grade-level Deans to support the development of SBMS’ multi-faceted curriculum, carefully balancing our student’s current and future needs with teacher autonomy and curricular implementation;
Work to enhance and support our school culture, instruction and curriculum, and will support our teachers, students and parents on all aspects of the SBMS program: Academics, Community Service, Arts/Sports & Outdoor Education (trips);
Analyze student achievement data (including samples of student work) and use data to drive recommendations and decision-making;
COMMUNITY & CULTURE
Foster SBMS’ intentional school culture;
Play a major role in the life of the school, and be expected to be deeply involved in the day-to-day work of faculty and students;
Manage and resolve student discipline issues, bringing in family members as necessary;
Serve as a liaison for parent concerns and communication;
Represent SBMS and the Head of School when necessary at meetings and events, including board meetings, community-wide events, fundraising events, and more;
Be a presence on and around campus, including after-hours school sponsored events;
Model the tone, values, and mission of SBMS through all actions and decision-making;
Continue to strengthen and keep skills current by attending conferences, seminars and other professional development opportunities.
Supervise, coach and evaluate a team of teachers, helping them grow in their profession and craft, through observation, modeling, analyzing data, and co-teaching;
Collaborate with the Head of School in the recruitment and hiring of a diverse, highly effective faculty and staff;
Seek and schedule leaders in the education field to provide professional development training to faculty;
Assist the Head of School in developing the school’s annual priorities, goals, and strategies;
Coordinate the school calendar and schedules;
With the grade-level Deans, manage aspects of the daily school operations;
Serve as representative of the school to make decisions in the absence of the Head of School;
TEACHING & OUTDOOR EDUCATION
Assume other responsibilities, which may include a teaching role, and will include participation in SBMS’ Outdoor Education Program
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
The Assistant Head of School will demonstrate the following:
A strong belief that the middle school years are pivotal times in a person’s life, and a deeply held belief that all students are capable of achieving at high levels;
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced work environment;
Strong work ethic, perseverance, and willingness to go above and beyond for our students and wider community;
Successful experience mentoring and managing adults;
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills;
Strong computer skills with Mac and/or PC, conversant in Excel, Word, Google Docs and Sheets;
Outstanding organizational and planning skills, professionalism, and attention to detail;
A collaborative mindset and effective consensus-building skills;
Experience taking initiative and using data to creatively solve problems;
Familiarity with and experience in the principles of Experiential Education;
Outdoor leadership and technical skills, including cycling (road and mountain biking), backpacking, kayaking, camping, etc.;
Willingness and physical capability to fully participate in SBMS’ Outdoor Education Program, including +/- 25 days and nights per year on trips.
The position is expected to start on July 1, 2018. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
