Set in the breathtaking landscape of Northern Idaho, Northwest Academy is a premier 82-bed therapeutic residential high school that is specifically designed to meet the unique needs of older adolescents 16-18 years of age. Over a one year period faculty assist students as they transition to young adulthood. Northwest Academy creates opportunities for students to pursue maturity and success.
We are currently accepting applications for a full-time Adventure Education Counselor who will be responsible for the following:
Direct and facilitate safe and effective recreational and adventure activities for students ages 16-18. Plan, prepare, and facilitate adventure recreation activities. Instruct and train technical skills needed by participants for the designated adventure activity. Directly supervise participants during campus and adventure activities; provide crisis intervention as needed. Participate in pre and post activity briefings. Responsible for setting goals and establishing plans to meet the therapeutic needs of each participant. Provide support during group processing, family meeting, staff meetings and work projects. Responsible for maintaining necessary certifications and training as applicable to Northwest Academy policies and procedures.
Job Requirements: A Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university in a related field and a minimum two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills. Wilderness First Responder Certification, Advanced First Aid/CPR and Crisis Prevention training required. Applicant must qualify to obtain Idaho State Guide license. Familiar with the therapeutic, programmatic and academic application within outdoor adventure and recreation environments. Knowledge of camping and travel techniques; including knowledge of environmental dangers related to seasons such as heat, flood, and avalanche. Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to supervise children with behavior problems.
Salary: This position is full-time and year round with a salary range of $32,000 – 38,000 per year dependent on education and experience. We also offer a comprehensive benefits package available after 30 days of employment.
